Don't Drink and Drive

“Don’t drink and drive.” It’s sage advice that is simple, familiar, and effective—when it’s followed.

But that’s the problem. Too many people continue to ignore the advice and drink and drive after having too many glasses. The message is not getting through.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every day, 28 people in the United States die in an alcohol-related crash—in another ones, one person every 51 minutes. Reportedly, DUI crashes kill more than 13,000 people annually, and these fatalities and damages contribute to a cost of $52 billion a year, the agency says.

In addition to deaths and injuries, people who drink and drive can also, unfortunately, experience other consequences, such as property damage and violence.


Drinking and driving do not go well together, but in one of the rarest instances, stakeholders of the alcohol and automobile industries joined hands for a campaign called ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’. The initiative was launched by filmmaker Mike Pandey and Football Factory’s Mark Seagraves in the city on Wednesday.

“With the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) under way and the city gearing up for other events, drinking and driving is a major problem in Goa. It reaches its peak during festivals and the year-end,” said director of Madame Rosa distillery, Mac Vaz. Vaz explained that the intention of the ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ campaign is to spread the message of responsible drinking by choosing alternatives such as calling a cab or requesting a non-drinking friend to take the wheel instead.

In order to raise awareness about the campaign, Rohit Hiraverkar of DC Design said celebrities attending Iffi will be ferried to the festival venue in a sports car. The car will also be parked at prominent spots in the city to enable interested locals to take a selfie with it. “Take a taxi home, but please do not drink and drive. Cars are meant to protect us, so why should someone die at the hands of a careless driver?
